Whole cloth quilt

It occurred to me last night that this dry weather would be perfect for a special washing project that I have been putting off for about four years!

I don't think I have blogged about my whole cloth quilt before. I started it in 2007 and hand quilted it (on and off) over the next three years. It came preprinted with blue wash out ink. I've used it on my bed a few times, but never got around to rinsing off the blue markings, I was too scared. So today is the day.

The design is "Queen Anne's Star", and it's a very large queen size. It got very boring at times, I found this quilt a real test of my resolve to be a "finisher", but I do love the end result. Here it is drying on the trampoline, and nothing terrible happened with the blue ink. And yes, I did have a happy volunteer to stand on the roof to take the photo.

If you're looking for a dose of fabulous reproduction work, check out this post at Every Stitch. I'm feeling very inspired and wishing I had a good reproduction patchwork store nearby.

  6. Wow! Susan that is beautiful. Such a huge project, I can understand how pleased you would be to finish and with such a lovely result. A real family heirloom. So glad you did not have trouble with the dye. Can't imagine how devastating it would have been.

  19. Its a big quilt, I can see why you put off washing it! I always save washing our every day quilts for the 40C days, but we have a big veranda to dry them on so they don't fade - I like your idea of drying on the trampoline! Glad the pen all came out, but pleased we saw the before shots though, so we could see the great pattern. I am impressed with your hand quilting skills and patience, what a finish!

  23. To copy cat from Ballarat Anthea...Oh Wow!...beautiful, absolutely beautiful...I emphathise with the blue ink rinse out trepidation, I had the same with the mini wholecloth I did and was amazed (and started breathing again) when it just rinsed out and totally disappeared like magic, and that was a mini, for a queen sized it would still be waiting!...
