Here is my Hexagon Star as a finished flimsy. I had less than one short edge left to appliqué.....at least now it's finished. I first posted about this quilt here in January 2012, but it goes back longer than that (2008 I think). It was my first hexagon project and something of an ugly duckling for a long while. I started it mainly to practice hexagons and use up scraps. But of course then I had to buy a big enough background piece........so much for being thrifty.
I have enough batting but need to get something for the back. I had thought about a pieced back like this........
........but I just don't think it will look right. Since it's a scrap project I'm trying to avoid spending too much on the backing. What sort of backing would you look for.......striped, floral, what colour? All suggestions much appreciated.
Here is my little pincushion from last week looking a bit flat.

School holidays have started here - yippee! We are off to Bathurst tomorrow to see Man of Steel (no chick flicks with 3 boys) and visit my parents.
Happy stitching.

Congraulations on getting it finished...have you counted how many Hexie's there are...it looks Fabulous...
ReplyDeleteYour Hexies are so fantastic. I love this star.
ReplyDeletewell done on your finish!! I think it looks great. I would put a lighter backing I think so that it doesn't show through the light fabric at all.
ReplyDeletelove your new little pincushion.
Have fun at the movies... I am taking my four nieces to the movies so that we will see a more 'feminine' movie these holidays.
Don't know why I haven't done this earlier.
Your quilt is stunning, I think a plain coloured back will look nice, like Marina said, so it doesn't show through the front.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on finishing that quilt top, it looks great. I don't see a problem with piecing the back but maybe lighter fabrics just in case they show through to the front. I should take a leaf out of your book and finish one of my ongoing projects. I am sure that you will breathe life into that cute little pincushion very soon.
ReplyDeletebeautiful Susan,i think i would go a plain colour for the back maybe a light brown,i am sure you will pick the right one,it looks fantastic, poor little pin cushion needs her stuffing, have fun at the pics and visiting with your mum.xx
ReplyDeleteGoodness that looks fantastic.......you must pleased..what about a homespun...its very hardy....have fun at the movies...
ReplyDeleteWow Susan... I LOVE IT. It is something I always wanted to do.

Love your quilt. Well done on finishing it. I think a homespun would be a good idea too if you're going for thrifty.Looks like there's room for some interesting quilting around that star and a light, plain fabric would allow you to see all of that lovely work that you do on the back as well. OR those wideback backing fabrics often come in a tone on tone all over design and are a cheaper way to buy backing fabric. In a light fabric, the quilting would still be a feature.
ReplyDeleteWonderful hexagon star! I can imagine something striped - with dark and light stripes mixed :) or may be big hexagons pieced together?
ReplyDeleteLove the future pincushion!
Hugs,
Tatyana
Simply fabulous!!!!!! I agree with Marina lighter backing I think. Clever girl :-)
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt! Sorry no suggestions on the backing, not very experienced with that! Lol
ReplyDeleteWe are going to see Man of Steel on Tuesday night, I gave hubby a gold class voucher for his birthday so I suppose I had better let him pick the movie lol
Your hexagon star is absolutely amazing Susan. I was thinking the reds (as lovely as they are) might show through on the light background. Can't believe you've nearly finished that gorgeous pincushion already
ReplyDeleteYour quilt top looks great Susan.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is gorgeous, certainly not an ugly duckling any more! Such a lot of work too. Enjoy the holidays and movies.
ReplyDeleteUse up your "no longer my fav" pieces of fabric and piece them a) random of b) in a long line (short pieces) and two bigger pieces either side. If you dont love this flimsy, no point using your best fabric on the back, nothing wrong with second best. I quite like this quilt, but I know how something that has been hanging around for years can fall off the favorites list...I like it a bit to the current PM!
ReplyDeleteGreat work Susan...I straightaway thought of plainer fabric...maybe cream, even some fat 1/4 joined together could work or leftover fabrics.
ReplyDeleteSo that is where the addiction first started? love it....I love pieced backings.. you don't have a pile of light coloured scraps to put together?
ReplyDeleteThe flat pincushion made me smile...
Hugz
I think a pieced back would look nice but I would use some of the colours you have on the front. What happened to your poor pin cushion ? Hugs.........
ReplyDeleteI have been a bit quiet on the blog scene lately but wow you have not been quiet on the stitching scene. Some lovely projects Susan. Love the bag you made for Kerry. Its so nice to finish long term projects good luck with the backing.
ReplyDeleteLooks fantastic Susan, not sure if I'm much help with backing ideas, I can never decide either.... I wonder if a trip to Bathurst meant a trip to a certain store or not......lol
ReplyDeleteWow it looks fabulous Susan, I would go with a beige or cream, with either a small floral or stripe, so the quilt looks old ....
ReplyDeleteBut that's just me I m into old looking quilts at the moment .....
Looking forward to seeing the pincushion, not so flat ....lol
Trish
Love the quilt . . . well done Susan! Perhaps another star on the back using what you have - let us know how many hexagons you have done. Enjoy your break with the family.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful quilt Susan .... lots of hours in them Hexies, well done !!!
ReplyDeleteLooks great...go for a plain cream back or a tone on tone as you will more than likely quilt those areas with cream thread....then it will look nice on the back also.... How do you plan to quilt it.
