Mr 17 and I took a little overnight trip to Sydney for some shopping and adventure. He very kindly let me drop in at Quiltsmith to buy the backing for my nieces quilt.
The colours in this quilt are right out of my comfort zone. I am having some real doubts about it, but her mum seems to think the colours are good, so I'll go with that. I went with a safer small print for the backing. I'll be quilting with white perle in the white areas, with a December deadline for her 18th. It's really hard making a gift quilt for a non quilter without their input, this may well be the last time I do it.
My DJ block keeper from the last post is working far too well........so well that I haven't sewn a single stitch of DJ since I made the block keeper. I have a few days off for school holidays this week so I'd better rectify that situation!
What I have been doing is fueling my renewed interest in cross stitch with some more small projects. I am thinking about starting something larger..........probably in red or indigo.
It's another beautiful Spring day here, so once again I am faced with the dilemma of gardening or sewing.......decisions, decisions.

it is difficult working outside your comfort zone with colours but those you have chosen look fantstic together!
ReplyDeletelovely cross stitcheries, hope you find some time for dear jane on your days off.
Hi Susan,i think it looks fantastic and a great choice for a teenager, you always do such lovely work,i wonder what won out the sewing or gardening, whichever wins i hope you enjoy your Sunday, its a nice day here but its blowing a gale.xx
ReplyDeleteI know just what you mean about gifting to non quilters - but am sure this will be wonderful, especially with the perle quilting you have planned. Good luck adding to your block keeper :)
ReplyDeleteIt is hard making quilts for others but it is looking beautiful, the colours work well together. Lovely cross stitches too.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is hard working with "other" colours. You have made a lovely quilt for your niece in contemporary colours so pat yourself on the back. Hope you did a bit of gardening and sewing. Your projects won't run away, they will be there waiting for you.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard making quilts in other people's colours. I just made one for my niece and ending up loving the colours.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure your niece will love her quilt...a handmade gift is always appreciated by those who don't make, as they can see the amount of
ReplyDeletesorry published before I finished!
Deleteas they can see the amount of work and love that went into the gift
Love the quilt Susan....and the cross stitch is gorgeous.....
ReplyDeleteI love the colours and the stitching in the white should look great.
ReplyDeleteIt may be outside your comfort zone, but it is very rich and gorgeous colors! Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteGreat choice for the backing, the colours put me in mind of the ocean...
ReplyDeleteTotally hear you about making colour and design decisions for people who don't quilt, but I love your quilt and I'm certain that your niece will too (spoken by someone who just finished a project like that :) ).
ReplyDeleteAgree with you about making quilts for others - am sure she will love it though - the fabrics are bright and modern. Your cross stitch is so imoressive!
ReplyDelete...hmmm - "impressive" that is :-)
ReplyDeleteI love the colours of your nieces quilt, I think it will look gorgeous. I keep making the mistake of using pink for DH nieces quilts, completely forgetting I hated pink as a teenager....now I have one extra quilt no one wants....so I think consulting her mother was a good idea! Love cross stitch, but my eyes don't. I think red on linen looks gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt top is really pretty... I don't think there is any need to doubt it..... loving your little cross stitch...

I ink your niece's quilt looks great Susan. It is hard working with colours and fabrics that are not your taste, but it looks very modern, perfect for a young person. Love you little cross stitch projects. What will you do with them?
ReplyDeleteI think your nieces quilt looks great, it is hard working on a quilt for another person. I was soo worried about my sisters and now I have just finished the top on my nieces. I think the lesson I learn t would be don t ask what the want, they have no idea...usually....lol. I love your block keeper, I really need one of those.
ReplyDeleteI love the colours in your niece's quilt! Fresh and bright......
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is really pretty I'm sure your niece will be thrilled. Maybe you could put your machine in the garden and sew outside....
ReplyDeleteYour niece will love her beautiful quilt Susan. I am in the same dilemma at the moment. My niece turns 18 in November and asked me to make her a quilt. I've made a start but her colors are out of my comfort zone too lol
ReplyDeleteit looks great.......perfect colours..........blue and green..........LOVE it..............
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed!.. Your colour choice is great and I think your niece will love it!!
ReplyDeleteLove the X-stitches too
Your quilt looks great Susan.....the colours look fine too! Enjoy your re-newal in cross stitch....it's just so lovely to do it!
