So, you know I'm looking for a cheaper source of crushed walnut shells. Well I found it, but I had to buy A LOT. So now I am the proud owner of a 6 kilo bag of crushed English walnut shells. I got them from Bills Pet Paradise in Bathurst today, apparently it's used for reptile enclosures. The lady didn't even skip a beat when I told her what I wanted them for, they sell quite a lot for pincushions. It's the smallest bag they sell, and it looks exactly like what I buy from craft stores.
I think I'll need to share!

Yes I bought the same it will keep you going for a long time ,it's a lot cheaper wY of buying it,well done Susan xx
ReplyDeleteI got mine from a pet supplies store too...only mine was a 3kg bag. Oh well...it keeps!
ReplyDeleteThat's a big un! lol Wonder how many pinchusion you can stuff with all those shell?. Are you up for the challenge....lol Have fun...xxx
ReplyDeleteYep - pet store for me, too. But I don't think my bag was quite that large! Now get busy making pin cushions. LOL!
ReplyDeletePerfect! Now you're set for life.:) That's a lotta pin cushions!
ReplyDeletei did the same thing , bought mine at pets or u and got a large bag.
ReplyDeleteI've been able to get that for quite awhile here in the States. It sure makes it easy to use for all those pincushions.
ReplyDeleteHehe - now you can make the world's biggest pincushion?! good find, and just in time for all that Xmas gift giving :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome, I guess that means you will be having another pincushion swap!! I kept reading that you could buy bags cheap at pet shops, but every pet shop I asked had no idea what I was talking about! But I will keep asking now I know the brand name, thank you.
ReplyDeleteIt is exactly the same product. Apparently it is also used for the beddybies of pet spiders...I love all animals but cannot imagine having big hairy scary spiders as pets
ReplyDeleteLooks to me like you have your work cut out for you now. Which came first, the pincushion or the filling??! :D
ReplyDeleteGreat idea Susan! I have to say, I've not used walnut shells as pincushion fill. Do you find they blunt the pins? I made a little felt pincushion ages ago and filled it with sand purchased with the kit. Sadly, I can't use it as a pincushion because it makes pins dull so quickly - I use it as a paperweight instead! But this experience has really slowed any desire to make more pincushions. Perhaps walnut shells are the game changer?!
ReplyDeleteI have the same "problem", Susan. After buying small amounts from Anni's online, I finally found staff at a local pet shop that knew exactly what I was talking about and didn't give me funny looks.Note to self : I must make (a lot!) more pincushions! Ros at Bloom, I've been using the walnut shells for years and haven't had a problem (unless you count spilling the walnut shells - even a tiny amount goes everywhere!)
ReplyDeleteLooks like everyone you know will be getting a pin cushion for Christmas!!
ReplyDeleteI've just been looking online to see why crushed walnut shells are so good - seems they provide good weight, environmentally friendly as pet as well as keeping pins sharp. However I also found that they can be a big problem for folks with nut allergies. Some of the oil would still be on the shells (and hence get onto your pins/needles and has been known to cause problems so be careful is selling or swapping. One of our sons is so allergic to macadamia nuts that he only has to touch the empty shells and he has a nasty reaction.
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of pin cushions to make if you bring a bag to the blog meet for me. Let me know how much I owe you.....Maybe 500 grams worth or whatever you think x
ReplyDeleteWe can get the same bag at our local pet supplier. they use it in the bottom of the lizard tanks she said
ReplyDeletelol! Yep... I've got the same bag! In fact, I've been using that same bag for a couple of years now? ;-)
ReplyDeleteGo girl ....xxxx

ReplyDeleteThat’s a lot of walnut shells. You could make a dog bed.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your pin cushions, Susan! I had the same 'problem', ended up with heaps of it....my crushed walnut shell is sold for cleaning guns!!
ReplyDeleteI think you are now the proud owner of a lifetime supply of pincushion filler. :) I can't wait to see what you stuff next.
ReplyDeleteI had thought of checking out that idea, but havent.. Great tip!! Oh and i know you wont have too much trouble using them up with your gorgeous pincuahions, Mayne time for another pincushion swap, heheheh!!!!
